Large French confit pot in terracotta, late 19th century, of generous scale and traditional form with an ovoid body, small foot, rolled collar, and opposing loop handles. The interior is glazed in warm brown, while the exterior is intentionally left unglazed, revealing a chalky, textured, mineral-like patina with blackened areas and old accretions. This weathered surface enhances its rustic charm.
Rooted in the rural pottery tradition of southwest France, the confit pot was used to preserve goose or duck in fat and stored in a cool cellar. The wheel-thrown earthenware body was coated inside with glaze for hygiene, while the exterior was left matte or only partially glazed. Painted letters likely served as farm or pantry inventory marks, practical notes on capacity or ownership that add to its history and craftsmanship.
A sculptural accent for a kitchen dresser, console, or open shelving, it brings authentic French provincial character to both rustic and contemporary interiors. Style it alone as a tactile focal point, group it with other country pottery, or use it as a vase with a liner for dried branches or fresh blooms.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
