This large antique confit pot is crafted in terracotta and shaped in a classic rounded form with two small loop handles at the shoulder. Traditionally, these vessels were only partially glazed, with the upper half sealed for preservation while the lower portion was left unglazed, a practical finish suited to storage and cellar use. Time has given the surface a lovely rustic patina, with areas of glaze loss, exposed clay, and softened edges that speak to decades of handling. What distinguishes this piece is a rare bluish glaze run, created by an incidental flow in the kiln when it was fired alongside pieces using cobalt oxide, a less common material. These singular vertical traces are unique to this pot and bring a painterly note to the warm ochre surface.
Today, this confit pot's generous scale and honest texture make a strong statement on a kitchen sideboard or island, where it can be used as a vessel for dried flowers or cooking utensils. It can also be left empty and displayed on open shelving with a grouping of confit pots, evoking the warmth of a traditional country kitchen.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
