Of impressive scale, this large French birdcage combines a late 19th-century wire aviary with a wrought-iron table base from the 1950s. The rectilinear cage is enclosed in fine mesh with a small arched door and a decorative central brace, and it is crowned by a pitched sheet-metal canopy with scrolled cresting and rolled edges. The stand features slender splayed legs and scrolling aprons, all finished in layered garden green paint over earlier coats. Surfaces show paint loss, oxidation, and rust; the canopy bears dents, some legs are slightly bent, and the mesh has a hole on one side, making it better suited for decorative display or requiring repair to house birds again.
This piece lends architectural presence to a garden room, sunporch, or covered terrace, where it can serve as a sculptural focal point. Style it with potted ferns and trailing ivy, or weave soft lighting inside for atmospheric evenings. Indoors, its weathered patina and lyrical scrollwork complement natural woods and stone, making a striking statement in an entry, dining room, or boutique display.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
