This large two-handled orjol from southwest France, dating to the late 19th century, is crafted in glazed earthenware with a generous ovoid body that swells to a short neck and rounded lip. It is framed by a pair of tall strap handles, one of which is ingeniously formed as a tubular spout, a defining feature of the type.
This inventive union of handle and spout is precisely what characterizes the traditional French water jug known as an _orjol_, a vessel designed for both carrying and pouring with ease. The surface carries an unusual apple-green copper glaze, softly mottled with natural drips and thinning at the high points to reveal the warm terracotta beneath. Striking in scale and color, the orjol makes a bold decorative accent. Displayed on a kitchen dresser, console, or farmhouse table, it can stand alone as a sculptural presence or be grouped with confit pots and other French country pottery. Styled as a dry vase for olive branches or wildflowers, it brings an authentic, rustic charm to both traditional and contemporary interiors.
