A large rustic French terracotta confit pot from the late 19th century, showcasing the traditional form with an ovoid body, rolled collar, and twin ear handles at the shoulder. The interior bears a weathered amber glaze, while the exterior has softened to a chalky buff, sand, and grey patina. The surface shows traces of old black paint, and hand-painted characters reading "CRP" 5 survive on one side, adding to its authentic character. A hairline on the body does not compromise the structure.
Originally used in rural kitchens of southwest France for preserving duck or goose meat in fat, such jars were partly buried in cool cellars to keep their contents fresh. Regional workshops in Languedoc and Dordogne produced these practical yet beautiful vessels until the mid-20th century, when refrigeration became widely available.
Sculptural and grounding, this jar works well on open shelving in the kitchen or beside a hearth, displayed empty or holding dried branches or utensils. For fresh greenery, use a liner.

Condition and patina consistent with age.
