This large mid-19th century French terracotta jar, known as a Biot jar, displays the characteristic ovoid form associated with the potteries of Biot in southern France. Its surface is warmly weathered, revealing the sandy tones of the fired clay with gentle traces of patination. Around the rim, the original honey-colored glaze remains, flowing irregularly down the neck. Striking green glaze runs, likely from another piece fired in the same kiln, add a rare and distinctive touch. The jar is in very good antique condition, with age-related wear that underscores its authenticity and timeless charm.
Jars of this type were traditionally produced in the village of Biot, near the Côte d’Azur, and were widely used for storing olives, oil, and other provisions. Their thick terracotta walls and rounded shape made them durable and practical for daily use.
Today they are appreciated as iconic examples of Provençal pottery, representing a centuries-old craft that blended utility with understated beauty. In a contemporary setting, this jar makes a striking decorative element both indoors and out. It can serve as a sculptural accent in an entryway, conservatory, or terrace, or be repurposed as a planter for citrus or olive trees, echoing its Mediterranean origins. Its combination of rustic surface and warm glaze lends authenticity and a timeless Provençal spirit to any space.
