This exceptional pair of English Chesterfield sofas date from the 1960s and were sourced from a pub in England. The proportions are fabulous - from the long seat area to the extra-wide arm and back rests, these brown leather sofas will be the focal point of any room. They have been nourished with leather conditioner and everything is original. Note the studwork, tufting and polished wood feet (the front two are bun feet). A new dustcover has been added underneath. A rare find.
The Chesterfield sofa is believed to have originated in the 18th century, with its name attributed to Philip Stanhope, the 4th Earl of Chesterfield (16941773). The Earl purportedly commissioned a local craftsman to create a piece of furniture that allowed a gentleman to sit upright without wrinkling his clothes, resulting in the iconic design. Chesterfield sofas are known for their distinctive features, including deep button tufting, rolled arms, and equal back and arm height. Traditionally upholstered in leather, they also feature a low seat base, nail head trim, and substantial use of cushioning. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Chesterfield sofas became synonymous with luxury and sophistication, often found in gentlemen's clubs, libraries, and high-end homes. Their association with British aristocracy and timeless design contributed to their enduring appeal.
