A substantial hand-carved limestone stoup from Provence, dating to the late 15th century. Sculpted from a single block with an integral rectangular back for wall mounting, it presents a deep hemispherical basin with a softly rounded lip. The stone reveals layered tones of honeyed buff, chalky cream, and mossy green, enriched by natural specking and mineral blooms. Centuries of touch and water have softened the rim and relief, leaving scattered pitting and age nibbles that attest to its long devotional use. Such early examples rarely survive with this degree of authentic wear and patina. Solid and stable when resting on a flat surface, it carries the quiet authority and presence of a medieval devotional object.
Traditionally set near the entrance of chapels or private oratories, stoups held sanctified water for the sign of the cross. This example is said to come from the private chapel of a noble residence in Provence. Evocative in an entry or stair hall, it can be mounted as a sculptural focal point, left dry for a natural arrangement of branches, or adapted as a birdbath on a terrace. Its palpable texture and age-softened contours anchor a space with the calm presence of centuries.

Condition and patina consistent with age.
