Black Forest desk accessory, late 19th century, originating from the Black Forest region of Switzerland or southern Germany. Hand carved in wood, likely linden as typical for Black Forest objects, the rocker blotter is surmounted by an expressive seated bear. The carving is crisp, with fine gouge work suggesting thick fur and small incised stars along the rocker’s arc. Stained a warm walnut brown and softly waxed, the surfaces show a mellow sheen and gentle rounding to the high points. Condition good and attractively timeworn, with scattered minor nicks and rubbing.
These lively figures reflect the 19th-century vogue for Black Forest carving, prized by Grand Tour travelers and chalet visitors alike. Workshops around Brienz and along the Bavarian border specialized in naturalistic fauna, working by knife and chisel in limewood before staining it to imitate darker hardwoods. Such objects brought a touch of Alpine folklore to elegant writing tables, uniting meticulous regional craft with playful subject matter.
Full of character, this piece brings warmth to a study, library, or mountain lodge interior. Style it beside antique books and a brass lamp to highlight its rich patina and the gentle presence of this charming bear.
A companion inkwell is available for separate purchase here.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
