A petite Black Forest bear desk set, late 19th century, likely Swiss or southern German. Hand-carved in dark-stained lindenwood, the seated bear is rendered with finely combed fur and a gentle, contemplative expression. The figure is flanked by a circular inkwell recess and a rectangular trough for pens or stamps, accompanied by a matching rocker blotter carved in the same style. The wood has developed a deep, mellow patina, with warm amber highlights along the muzzle and other raised surfaces where handling has softly burnished the carving over time. Condition is attractively timeworn, with small corner chips, minor edge nicks, and carving softened by age; the inkwell likely once held a glass or ceramic liner, now absent.
The “Black Forest” refers to the forested mountain region of southwestern Germany, famous in the 19th century for its distinctive woodcarvings of animals and rustic woodland scenes. Craftsmen, especially around the town of Brienz, became known for carving lifelike animals, bears, dogs, and woodland scenes in dark-stained wood. Many pieces were made as decorative yet practical objects for travelers visiting the region.
This small carved desk piece lends quiet personality to a writing table. The bear brings a touch of the outdoors into the study and serves as a subtle conversation piece : a traveler’s souvenir, a reminder of mountain landscapes, or simply a whimsical companion that gently softens the seriousness of the room.
A companion blotter is available for separate purchase here.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
