This late 19th century large transfer-printed ceramic wash jug, registered under the pattern name Woodpecker, features a softly paneled baluster form with a scalloped rim, generous spout, and high loop handle. The creamy glaze is decorated with a finely detailed charcoal-gray transfer of songbirds among bramble and blossom, reflecting the naturalistic taste of the Aesthetic Movement. The model was produced by the English pottery Brown Westhead Moore & Co. (1862–1904) and distributed in France by the Grand Dépôt Émile Bourgeois, founded in 1862.
Known as “Le Palais des Arts du Feu,” the Grand Dépôt Émile Bourgeois became the leading importer of English ceramics into France, expanding to Marseille in 1879 and rising to prominence across Europe. The wash jug is in very good condition, with light age-appropriate wear and no distracting flaws.
Filled with fresh flowers or winter branches, it comes beautifully to life, the cool gray print setting off green stems and white blossoms with effortless charm. It lends easy country elegance to a kitchen table, mantel, or open shelving, where it layers gracefully with white ceramics, pewter, and clear glass. Romantic yet restrained, its soft palette brings a calm, timeless note to both traditional and contemporary interiors.
