A French cul noir oval meat carving platter in glazed earthenware, late 19th century. The broad form is framed by a deeply scalloped rim finished in a dark manganese-brown band, contrasting with the warm ivory interior enriched by a fine crackle patina. The shallow well shows utensil marks from carving, while the rim carries small areas of enamel loss that reveal the underlying clay, lending the piece an authentic, timeworn character. Part of the tradition of French faïence rustique, cul noir wares were both practical and decorative, their darkened rims intended to disguise wear from heavy use.
Produced in provincial workshops, these platters were made for serving roasts, the recessed well designed to collect juices at table. Today, this example makes a rustic accent in the kitchen or dining room, whether displayed on a dresser, set as a centerpiece, or hung as wall décor, bringing provincial warmth to any interior.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
