This late 19th-century French atelier easel is crafted in solid hardwood, likely beech, with a warm nut-brown patina. The tall vertical mast supports an adjustable carriage and upper clamp, operated by a handsome hand-crank with metal fittings. Its distinctive base adds character, with shaped trestles joined by a serpentine stretcher centered by a turned finial, a scalloped apron, and small casters that allow for easy movement around the studio. The surface shows light wear and small restorations consistent with age and long use, adding to its authentic character.
Easels of this type were standard in Beaux-Arts studios of the Second Empire and Belle Époque, designed to hold large canvases securely while offering precise height control. The crank-operated rack demonstrates practical atelier savoir-faire, while the decorative base reflects Belle Epoque eclecticism, when even utilitarian studio furniture received refined menuiserie.
Today, the easel functions equally well as a working support or as a sculptural display stand. In a library, drawing room, or entry, it can present a painting, mirror, or photograph, adding vertical rhythm, artisanal warmth, and a quiet sense of history to any interior.
