A generous late 19th-century lantern in solid brass, conceived for wall mounting or to rest upon a table. Its square glazed body rises to a pyramidal top, crowned with a turned chimney and set at the corners with ball finials. Three clear glass panels enclose the sides, while the rear has lost its original mirror and is now fitted with a plain white panel that offers a discreet backdrop to the interior. The hinged front door closes with a small latch that carries a hint of unpredictability, and the whole rests upon four petite bun feet. The surface of the brass retains its rich, original patina, alive with oxidation and flecks of verdigris that attest to its age.
Originally designed for gas illumination and later converted to electricity, the lantern reflects both practical invention and decorative restraint. The form of the chimney, although not pierced, suggests a symbolic echo of venting devices rather than a functional one, indicating that it may have been intended for interior placement or for use with a modest flame where heat dispersal was less critical. This detail provides an intriguing glimpse into the variations of lighting solutions in the late 19th century. Its dignified geometry and careful detailing impart a quiet authority, making it well suited to an entry hall, stair landing, or sheltered garden room, whether mounted on a wall or resting upon a console.
