An exquisite late 19th-century French copper ferrat bucket of broad, low cylindrical form, hand raised from hammered copper sheets with a rolled rim, a lower reinforcing band, and four vertical strap stays secured by domed rivets. Opposed strap handles provide a comfortable grip, and the surface shows neat bands of pointillé punched decoration. The copper has a rich, mellow patina with warm tonal variation, while the interior retains traces of its original tin lining. It is watertight.
Ferrats served as standardized pre-metric measures across southern and central France, employed for grain, chestnuts, wine, and other staples. This riveted example reflects provincial savoir-faire of the late 19th century, when durable, hand-hammered copper was commonly étamé to resist acidity and facilitate food use. The dotted punchwork adds modest ornament and subtly stiffens the wall, while the robust handles and straps speak to its working life in rural commerce and on the farm, likely from southern or central France. In a contemporary setting it brings quiet authenticity and utility.
It works beautifully as a wine or Champagne cooler, a cachepot for herbs or seasonal bulbs with a liner, or a rustic centerpiece on a kitchen island. The warm copper tones harmonize with stone, wood, and linen, adding texture and French country character to a pantry, mudroom, or hearth, as well as to clean-lined modern interiors.
