A charming late 19th-century French oval copper terrine and jelly mold with a warm, mellow patina. The domed face is decorated in repoussé with pears and apples on leafy stems within a raised oval cartouche, framed by a gadrooned border reminiscent of a traditional Charlotte cake. A rolled rim with an iron strap and hanging ring allows for easy display. The interior retains traces of its original tin lining. In good, timeworn condition, it shows small dents, light surface scratches, and areas of oxidation and verdigris at the rim, all adding to its antique appeal.
Copper molds of this kind were a hallmark of Belle Époque restaurants and refined households, used for terrines, gelées, and elaborate desserts such as aspic and bavarois. Artisans in centers like Villedieu-les-Poêles shaped the designs by repoussé and chasing from heavy-gauge copper before lining them with tin for safe culinary use.
The fruit motif, symbolizing abundance, made for a delightful presentation when unmolded and remains an enduringly appealing decorative feature when displayed. Perfect for a kitchen wall among a curated collection of antique molds, this piece adds authentic French country character and a touch of warmth to any interior.
