Petite late 19th century footstool with a white-painted wooden base and a hand-worked needlepoint top in a richly saturated rose-crimson ground. The wool tapestry is executed in a large-point stitch, forming a classical urn overflowing with scrolling stems and stylized blossoms in soft cream, sage, and muted ochre. The design stands out crisply against the dense field of stitching, whose slightly varied tones and subtle irregularities attest to its handmade character. The textile is secured with darkened upholstery tacks. The frame is gently contoured, with shaped legs and a serpentine apron carved with small floral details. The painted surface shows honest wear and rubbing along the edges, softly accentuating the carving. Overall, it presents a pleasing timeworn patina, with minor fraying and mellowed color consistent with long domestic use.
This small piece brings a note of comfort and color to a room, ideal beside an armchair, at a dressing table, or tucked by the hearth. It can also be pressed into service as a low riser to elevate a stack of art books, a folded throw, or a decorative object, adding quiet height and texture to a vignette. The soft red ground and pale carving introduce a gentle contrast that works equally well in layered traditional settings or pared-back spaces, lending an easy warmth and a sense of continuity with the past.
