Quietly sculptural and full of presence, this late 19th century oil jar is hand-thrown in glazed earthenware with a rounded, gently ribbed body, a short rolled neck, and a raised pouring spout set just above the shoulder. Three arched handles articulate the form, while the surface carries a softly reflective olive-green glaze that pools in the recessed channels and thins to warm ochre tones along the high points. The glaze shows scattered losses, small nicks, and kiln freckles, all contributing to its rustic charm. Made in southern France for storing walnut oil, it survives in attractively timeworn condition that speaks to everyday use and careful craftsmanship.
In an interior, it reads as a grounded, tactile accent, ideally suited to an entry console, kitchen dresser, or dining room sideboard, where its earthy glaze and rounded silhouette introduce quiet warmth. It may stand alone as a sculptural presence or be grouped with other terracotta vessels for an evocative farmhouse composition. The jar pairs effortlessly with weathered wood, stone, and natural textiles, while also bringing authentic texture and depth to a more pared-back, contemporary setting.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
