This tall ceramic umbrella stand, dating to the late 19th century and likely from Vallauris, is modeled as a naturalistic tree stump. The bark is deeply sculpted with knots and textured relief, covered in a glossy glaze that blends chestnut, moss, ochre, and midnight blue, with the colors pooling to accentuate its rugged surface. The irregular scalloped rim mimics torn bark, while the interior is coated in a rich brown glaze.
Although unsigned, the form and palette are strongly reminiscent of the Massier workshops at Vallauris, known for their inventive trompe l’œil ceramics. The condition is consistent with age and use, showing scattered rim chips, and glaze losses, along with a stable hairline near the lower section and losses around the underside. These timeworn details enhance the character of the piece, underscoring its historic authenticity and tactile presence.
Substantial in scale, it serves beautifully as a sculptural umbrella stand in an entry, or as a striking vessel for walking sticks, tall dried branches, or decorative grasses, bringing a rustic yet refined woodland note to both traditional and modern interiors.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
