This generous pair of 19th-century flat-back armchairs in the Louis XIV style features richly carved giltwood frames with sweeping scroll arms, turned baluster supports, and boldly sculpted stretchers. The original gilding survives with a beautifully timeworn patina on the front stretchers, while the arms reveal warm bole and underlying wood emerging softly through wear. Upholstered in pale damask, the chairs lend a stately presence that remains welcoming.
These armchairs reflect the 19th-century revival of grand Baroque seating, a period that embraced strong architectural silhouettes, expressive carving, and ceremonial gravitas while adapting proportions and upholstery for greater comfort and domestic use.
Wide, stable, and comfortable, the pair is well suited to a formal living room flanking a fireplace, a library, or a generous entry hall. They also make distinguished host chairs at a dining table, where the carved stretchers and softened gilding add quiet drama. Paired with a marble-top console, antique rug, or a simple linen throw, their layered surface and confident form bring depth and character to both classical and contemporary interiors.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
