This late 19th-century terracotta confit pot features a rounded belly and a collared, flared rim, with two generous ear handles carved with raised ribs. The surface is finished in a richly speckled green glaze, applied over a pale slip creating a distinct intermediate band between the glazed upper section and the red unglazed clay lower body. Hand-thrown in the south of France, the pot bears a stamped model number “5” on the body and reflects the practical pottery of rural kitchens, where such vessels were used to store rendered pork or duck fat in a cool pantry. Scattered glaze losses, small rim chips, and surface wear speak to long use and lend the piece its warm, rustic charm.
Its generous form and lively green color bring a fresh, authentic note to a kitchen or dining room. Style it on open shelving or an island as a sculptural accent, gather wooden spoons or dried herbs within, or use it as a flower vessel with a glass liner. The mellow glaze and softly weathered clay pair beautifully with stone, wood, and linen, adding quiet provençal charm to both contemporary and traditional interiors.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
