This petite ritual hourglass, likely French and late 19th century, is formed with a dark stained hardwood frame of circular top and base incised with concentric rings. Four tapered uprights support a hand-blown double-bulb glass vessel filled with fine russet sand calibrated for an hour’s run. The ends of the frame are firmly secured with metal wire, a practical detail that adds to its authentic, utilitarian character. The piece shows a warm patina with light abrasions to the wood and minor surface marks to the glass, overall in good timeworn condition.
Hourglasses of this type remained in use long after mechanical clocks, serving for prayer, reading, and household tasks. In provincial France, their simple turned profiles and functional construction reflected vernacular craftsmanship, while the seeded glass and ochre sand carried rustic charm. Today, this example makes a distinctive accent on a desk, mantel, or bookshelf, offering both historical presence and a tactile reminder of measured time.
