This small Spanish Lebrillo bowl, likely 19th century, is wheel-thrown in terracotta and features a shallow, flaring form with a slightly raised rim. The interior is decorated with a bold green glaze in a stylized floral rosette at the center, enclosed by a zigzag border and small scrolling flourishes. Areas of thinning, light surface wear, and small edge chips speak to its age and use. The exterior is left unglazed in warm ocher terracotta, heightening the contrast with the glossy, decorated interior.
Lebrillos of this type were common in Andalusian households, produced in local workshops that carried forward Hispano-Moresque decorative traditions. The green-on-white palette, achieved through copper oxide glazes, was especially popular in Granada and other centers of southern Spain. Used for preparing food, kneading dough, or serving at the table, these bowls blended utility with ornament, each piece hand-decorated to ensure no two were alike. Their simplicity of form paired with decorative vibrancy made them enduring fixtures of everyday domestic life.
In a modern setting, this smaller Lebrillo brings authentic Mediterranean character to interiors. It works beautifully as a fruit or serving bowl on a kitchen counter, dining table, or console, where its vivid green decoration draws the eye. Alternatively, it can be hung on a wall in combination with other ceramics for a striking display. Its ocher exterior and patterned interior add warmth, texture, and a touch of Andalusian history to both rustic and contemporary spaces.
