This unframed late 19th-century oil on canvas still life is signed Juliany, a pseudonym used by Eugène Galien-Laloue (1854–1941). The composition brings together a reflective metal pot, a stoneware jug, a white ceramic platter, and clusters of red and white currants with green plums. The palette moves from deep greens and umbers to warm ivory tones, enlivened by the bright berries. Deft handling of texture and reflection captures the gleam of metal and the translucent skins of the fruit. The work is by a painter better known for landscape paintings, yet equally admired for his virtuoso technique. The condition is good, with light craquelure and pinpoint paint losses.
This painting brings a warm, late-summer harvest glow to an interior, its vivid reds of currants flashing brilliantly against the muted greens, browns, and soft ivories of the surrounding vessels. The fruit appears almost luminous, energizing the quiet arrangement and drawing the eye across the tabletop. It would enliven a kitchen, dining room, or pantry wall with subtle color and period charm. It can be leaned on open shelving among copper or tin cookware, hung above a marble console with stoneware jugs, or framed in gilt wood to anchor a more formal dining space.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
