This striking Renaissance Revival curule chair, often referred to as a "Savonarola" or "Dante" chair, is a masterful example of late 19th-century craftsmanship inspired by Italian designs of the 15th and 16th centuries. Made from richly toned hardwood, the chair features the iconic X-frame construction that defines this form, with gracefully sweeping legs and arms that curve in tandem to create an elegant silhouette.
The chair’s carved detailing is particularly noteworthy: the top rail showcases intricate scrolling acanthus motifs and a stylized palmette crest, while the central support panel is finely pierced and flanked by small volutes. Grotesque masks are carved on either side of the arm posts, adding a theatrical and mythical element typical of Renaissance ornamentation. Additional decorative touches include carved rosettes along the frame and a lion’s mask medallion anchoring the intersecting arches beneath the seat—a traditional symbol of strength and nobility. The arms terminate in tightly scrolled handholds, echoing the classical design vocabulary.
Likely intended more for visual impact than comfort, this chair would have served as a ceremonial or decorative piece in a grand interior. With its sculptural form and bold historic references, it makes a dramatic focal point in a library, bedroom, or gallery.
