This charming ceramic pot from Martres-Tolosane, dating to around 1900, has an ovoid body rising to a rolled lip and flanked by ear-shaped loop handles. The warm white tin-glazed surface is painted with soft cornflower-blue floral sprays, framed by a wavering band at the shoulder and a fine line at the foot. The decoration sits lightly in the glaze, creating a feathered effect.
Condition is good, with light surface wear, small firing pits, and an old, stable repair to one handle. Martres-Tolosane was a long-established center of faience production in southwestern France, celebrated for its blue-and-white ceramics as well as for everyday wares enlivened by hand-painted ornament. While the workshops also produced colorful polychrome designs, the restrained use of monochrome blue lends this piece a graceful and understated presence.
Today the pot makes a calm sculptural accent, suited to a console, mantel, or kitchen island, where its blue-and-white palette complements stone, painted cabinetry, and natural wood. It can be used as a vase for branches or flowers with a liner, or grouped with other pottery to highlight regional craftsmanship.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
