A mid 19th century French Alpine cream bowl from Savoie, hand carved from a single block of hardwood, likely fruitwood. The elongated oval body has thick, softly rounded walls and two integral lug handles, one pierced for hanging and extended to act as a small pouring spout. Surfaces show lively grain, visible tool marks, and warm honey to chestnut tones with a darker, worked interior.
Rooted in the tradition of French art populaire, this bol à crème would have been used in farmhouse dairies to decant cream after skimming milk for cheesemaking, then hung to dry by its pierced handle. Carved en plein bois for strength and early watertightness, such treen showcases the practical savoir-faire of Savoie, home to storied Alpine cheeses and a long lineage of utilitarian woodwork shaped by shepherds and smallholders. Its pared, organic silhouette aligns with the art brut aesthetic now valued by collectors of vernacular objects.
As a decorative accent, it lends tactile warmth to a kitchen, pantry, or mountain retreat. Hang it from a peg rail, display it on open shelving, or place it on an island as a sculptural bowl for citrus, dried botanicals, or wooden utensils. Paired with stoneware, woven baskets, and old cutting boards, it anchors a rustic yet refined vignette and brings authentic Alpine character to contemporary interiors.
