Compact yet refined, this Louis-Philippe style giltwood mirror from the mid-19th century presents a softly arched rectangular frame with rounded shoulders. The design is adorned with finely sculpted floral cartouches at the corners and delicate leaf motifs at the midpoints. The water-gilded surface has worn beautifully to reveal the warm red bole beneath, lending depth to the soft gold. An inner ornate molding frames the original mercury-glass plate, which displays the characteristic sparkle so prized in antique mirrors.
In good, timeworn condition, with scattered rubbing to the gilding, small losses to the gesso ornament, and minor losses to the mercury consistent with age. Its compact scale makes it an easy, elegant addition to many rooms. Hang it above a console in an entry to brighten the approach, layer it on a mantel for a softly aged focal point, or place it in a powder room where the warm gilt and subtle red undertones add character. The timeworn surface pairs well with painted paneling, stone and marble, or contemporary art, while the mercury plate amplifies candlelight and crystal fixtures with a gentle sparkle.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
Note: Mirrors have been photographed facing fabric, a technique that reveals any age spots in the glass. In some cases, this may create the appearance of an empty frame, but each mirror is complete except where explicitly stated.
