A generously scaled French champagne wooden shipping crate, rectangular with slatted sides and nailed construction. The pale honeyed timber carries black stenciled legends for Champagne Billecart-Salmon and Mareuil s/ Ay, with numerals to one end, and retains a dry cellar patina. Surface marks, old nail heads, darkened knots, scattered stains, and a few shallow age lines attest to long service, the overall condition timeworn and weathered yet sturdy and functional. Mid 20th century, Champagne region, France.
Wooden transport crates of this type were standard equipment in the grandes maisons, used to move and store bottles between the cuverie and the caves before cardboard replaced timber. Billecart-Salmon, founded in 1818 by Nicolas François Billecart and Elisabeth Salmon in Mareuil-sur-Ay, is celebrated for its meticulous élevage and the finesse of its Brut Rosé, and branding on crates served both identification and promotion within the labyrinthine cellars.
This crate brings instant character to a mudroom, wine cellar, or hearth. Use it beside the fireplace for kindling, pinecones, or neatly stacked logs, line it as a rustic cachepot for a large indoor plant, or slide it under a console to corral throws and magazines. It suits farmhouse and French country interiors, pairs well with industrial loft settings, and offers a tactile counterpoint to crisp contemporary rooms.
Condition and wear consistent with age and use.
