A mid 20th century French champagne shipping crate from Épernay, constructed in pine with through-nailed boards and robust corner cleats. The wood shows a pale honey tone with warm oxidation, stenciled in umber with CHAMPAGNE GAUTHIER EPERNAY to the front and a red inventory number to the side. Utilitarian in character yet graphic in presence, it presents a generous, sturdy scale.
Épernay sits at the heart of the Champagne region, home to historic maisons that moved bottles between cave and loading dock in stout caisses before the widespread adoption of corrugated cartons. Mid century examples such as this were typically made in softwood for li
ghtness, then branded by stencil for ready identification in the cellars and during export. The bold roman lettering and serial stamp reflect the practical, trade graphics of the period, while the straightforward joinery speaks to the region’s no-nonsense savoir-faire in vintners’ equipment.
This crate lends authentic atelier character to interiors. Beside a hearth, it neatly holds firewood, pinecones, or kindling. In a wine room or pantry, it organizes bottles or linens, and with a fitted liner it makes a handsome cachepot for a potted olive or citrus. Slide it under a console for throws, in a mudroom for boots, or let the typography bring a relaxed, rustic note to a bar area or open shelving.
