This petite mid-20th-century French ceramic mustard pot from _Maison Maille, _the historic Parisian mustard and vinegar house founded in 1747, is a charming piece of culinary heritage. Modeled in a warm, glossy caramel glaze with its original fitted lid, the pot is inscribed in a hand-painted script that reproduces Maille’s historic 18th-century advertising text, noting its status as “Seul Vinaigrier du Roy” (the sole vinegar-maker to the King) along with the 1760 royal appointment. As expected for a vessel intended to hold food, the interior is fully glazed, in a contrasting cream-white hue. Light speckling and gentle wear to the glaze add to its vintage charm, and overall it presents in very good condition.
Under the base, an interesting stamp declares the pot to be for Maille mustard alone, a protective measure ensuring that diners were never served lower-quality substitutes in an authentic Maille vessel.
This little pot brings a warm, nostalgic note to a kitchen or dining area, its caramel glaze and handwritten script adding charm to open shelves or a pantry vignette. Perfect as a mustard pot, it can also hold honey or salt at the table, or be repurposed for small utensils or dried flowers. Its compact scale and historic typography lend an easy French touch to both rustic and contemporary spaces.
