Petite hand-painted terracotta tile plaque depicting the Virgin and Child, rendered in rich polychrome glazes of ochre, oxblood red, umber, cobalt, and green with dark incised outlines. The figures appear frontally with halos and simplified features, the robes enriched by geometric bands and stylized patterning. A fine, allover crackled glaze animates the surface. Signed with an artist’s monogram at the lower right. Drawing on Byzantine and Romanesque iconography, the frontal stance, almond eyes, and orant gesture convey a devotional theme long echoed in Mediterranean folk art. The technique marries low-relief modeling and sgraffito-style incising beneath a polychrome glaze, a language embraced by mid-century studio potters who blended vernacular spirituality with a modern naïve hand. Such plaques were made for household shrines and intimate wall displays, their warm earthen palette and geometric borders reflecting regional craft traditions from Italy and Spain to the Levant.
This soulful tile lends quiet presence to an entry, prayer corner, or library wall. Hang it within a gallery arrangement of works on paper and small ceramics, or place it on a tabletop easel atop a console for layered texture. Its warm tones complement limewashed walls, natural wood, and gilt frames, while the timeworn surface introduces an inviting, collected character to both traditional and contemporary interiors.
