A mid-20th-century oil on canvas garden study of chrysanthemums, presented in a slender gilt wood frame. Lush swirls of blush, coral, and cream petals rise from deep moss and olive-green grounds, rendered with soft, atmospheric handling. The brushwork is lively yet controlled, allowing the flowers to appear both abundant and weightless against the subdued background. The painting is signed at lower right by Gabrielle Nicolson, who was born in Nancy in the early 20th century, trained under Achille Cesbron, Adler, and Montézin, and exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français, where she presented works in 1929 and 1937 reflecting an Impressionist-influenced, atmospheric approach. Light wear to the surface is consistent with age.
Chrysanthemums have long held rich symbolic meaning in art, often associated with endurance, reflection, and the quiet beauty of maturity, as well as remembrance and the passing of seasons. Their complex, layered forms made them especially appealing to painters from the late 19th century onward, offering endless variation in color and movement. Here, the blossoms feel at once celebratory and contemplative, their warmth softened by a restrained, almost meditative palette.
Hung above a console or mantel, the painting brings a quiet, reflective mood, its softened palette enlivened by delicate movement and color. It pairs effortlessly with dark wood, linen, and aged brass, or adds a note of depth and atmosphere to a gallery wall.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
