A faux pair of French blown glass absinthe bistro glasses, late 19th to early 20th century. Each presents a slender hourglass bowl with a gently flared lip set on a short baluster stem and broad circular foot, the clear glass thick and pleasantly weighty. The pair is closely matched yet not identical, with small variations in profile and height that speak to hand production.

Rooted in Belle Époque verre de bistrot, these service glasses reflect the practical durability favored in cafés across France and Switzerland, where absinthe was poured from a carafe or fountain. The spirit, distilled with wormwood, anise, and fennel, was traditionally served à l’eau by placing a sugar cube on a perforated absinthe spoon over the glass and allowing a slow drip of cold water to create the milky louche. Popularized by Pernod Fils and other maisons from the early 19th century until the bans of the 1910s, such forms ranged from reservoir-measured types to elegant hourglass silhouettes like these, prized for both utility and the simple savoir-faire of handblown production.

Perfect on a bar cart or open shelving, they add authentic Belle Époque character to a dining room or library. Use them for absinthe service with a spoon and carafe, as petite stems for pastis or amaro, or as refined bud vases on a mantel. Their clear, weighty glass complements silver, nickel, or brass barware and lends understated grace to both contemporary and traditional interiors.
