A charming small reliquary dating from the late 18th to early 19th century, crafted in papier-mâché and glass. The piece is dedicated to Sainte Colombe and another Saint, whose names appear on delicate banners within the composition. At its centre stands a small wax figure of the Virgin, set within an arched niche and surrounded by an intricate arrangement of floral elements, gilt brass ornaments, and devotional motifs. The vibrant blue background, accented with cloud-like white marbling, enhances the luminous and theatrical presentation typical of such objects.
This type of reliquary was intended for private devotion, often displayed in domestic interiors as a focus for prayer and contemplation. Crafted from mixed materials such as wax, paper, metal, and glass, it reflects a tradition of intimate, symbolic devotional art and many were made as convent work, created by nuns with meticulous care.
Condition reflects age and fragility. The glass is cracked in the upper right corner, and there is minor wear consistent with time, but the overall composition remains intact and visually appealing.
A delicate and evocative object, ideal for collectors of religious artefacts or for display in a cabinet of curiosities, bringing a sense of history and quiet spirituality to an interior.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
