A chic pair of French round guéridon or end tables from the 1940s, executed in an elegant Empire Revival manner, revisiting the formal vocabulary of early 19th-century French design through a modern lens. Each table is topped with a richly figured burl wood surface finished to a deep, mirror-like polish that recalls the visual depth of hardstone or lacquer, further emphasized by ebonized concentric banding and a finely fitted gilded bronze rim. A maker’s stamp is present beneath the top, though now indistinct, attesting to high-quality workshop production.
The sculptural bases are cast in gilded bronze, formed with four slender, curving legs terminating in finely chased paw feet and surmounted by stylized eagle-head mounts beneath the apron. The legs are linked by a shaped cross-stretcher accented at the center with a small finial, lending both stability and visual rhythm. The bronze retains a warm, softly glowing patina that complements the lustrous burl wood tops, reinforcing the tables’ refined neoclassical character and enduring chic.
Perfectly scaled for use on either side of a sofa, flanking a bed, or serving as elegant occasional tables in a sitting area, these tables function beautifully as drinks tables, lamp stands, or night tables. The interplay of glossy burl wood, sculptural bronze, and balanced proportions gives the pair an effortlessly chic presence in both traditional and contemporary interiors.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
