This pair of 19th-century Louis XVI style oval mirrors features carved wood frames with a mellow gilt finish that lends quiet grandeur to an interior. Their beaded inner borders accentuate the simple, graceful outline of each frame, giving the mirrors a restrained elegance that works seamlessly in both traditional and contemporary spaces. The original mercury-backed plates show beautifully mottled foxing, soft silvery blooms, and areas of desilvering that enhance their antique character, with a few scratches on one plate becoming visible when viewed closely. The gilt surfaces show small areas of later retouching rather than full regilding, which preserves the harmonious glow of the frames while maintaining their authentic patina overall.
Together, the two mirrors create a balanced, elegant presence. They work beautifully flanking a mantel, anchoring a hallway hung either one above the other, or adding symmetry above paired consoles. In any setting, their warm gold tones and softened reflections complement each other, bringing depth, light, and a gentle sense of history to the room.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
Note: Mirrors have been photographed facing fabric, a technique that reveals any age spots in the glass. In some cases, this may create the appearance of an empty frame, but each mirror is complete except where explicitly stated.
