This rare and elegant pair of silver-plated water pitchers was designed in the 1930s by celebrated French artists Louis Süe (1875–1968) and André Mare (1887–1932) for the Gallia collection by Christofle. Embodying the refined sophistication of the Art Deco era, the jugs feature clean, angular silhouettes and subtle plant motifs in low relief. Each is stamped underneath with “Gallia,” the Christofle hallmark “OC,” and the model number 5978, all signs of authenticity and exceptional French craftsmanship.
Süe and Mare, both accomplished painters and architects, were leading figures in early 20th-century French design. As founders of the Compagnie des Arts Français in 1919, they helped define the Art Deco movement with a signature style that blended classical elegance and modern form. Their collaboration with Christofle produced some of the period’s most celebrated decorative works.
In this pair, one pitcher remains in excellent vintage condition, while the other shows slight wear on the interior, typical of age and use, and not visible when displayed. Owning a matching set is a rare find and is especially appealing for those who appreciate symmetry and balance on a beautifully set table.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
