A striking pair of low pedestal stands from the 1940s, crafted in polychrome painted wood with sculpted cherub head decoration. Each square pedestal features a molded panel framing a relief mask of a cherub on one side, while the surrounding panels display hand painted faux marble decoration that adds visual depth and decorative contrast. The surfaces are layered in softly aged ivory tones with traces of verdigris, umber, and muted pigments, creating a richly textured patina that reveals successive layers of paint and finish. Resting on stepped plinth bases, the pair displays a beautifully weathered surface that enhances their sculptural presence.
Drawing on Baroque and ecclesiastical motifs, these pedestals recall the putti and ornamental carving of earlier centuries, their layered painted surfaces adding texture while continuing the tradition of stands used to elevate urns, busts, or candelabra in hallways and salons.
They work beautifully as flanking accents beside a doorway with planters, as end tables on either side of a sofa, or as distinctive bedside tables for small lamps; their unique sculptural character also lends itself especially well to a garden room or veranda, where they can support Medici urns or clipped topiaries and their richly weathered surface adds texture and personality to the space, provided they remain in a sheltered setting.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
