A matched pair of 19th-century hand-coloured engravings of Venetian vedute, presented under glass in richly figured burr walnut cushion frames. One view depicts the Piazza San Marco with the Campanile and Basilica beyond, while the other shows the lively Venetian waterfront, likely the Molo with Santa Maria della Salute in the distance. The colouring remains fresh and lively, with light age toning to the sheets and a small stain to one print. The lightweight burr walnut frames show gentle wear and minor irregularities consistent with age. The reverse retains later handwritten labels in French identifying the views and artists.
These hand-coloured engravings belong to the long tradition of Venetian vedute that captivated Grand Tour travellers from the 18th century onward, following the celebrated city views of Canaletto and Guardi. By the 19th century, finely detailed engravings of Venice were produced across Europe and often heightened by hand with delicate washes. Romantic yet topographical, such views served both as treasured travel souvenirs and enduring celebrations of Venice’s architectural splendour.
The pair hangs beautifully above a console in an entry, flanking a mirror in a sitting room, or layered into a study with Grand Tour intaglios and marble objets. Their compact scale suits a gallery wall, while the warm walnut frames harmonize effortlessly with paneled libraries, painted plaster walls, or contemporary neutral interiors, bringing a quiet sense of travel, discovery, and collected elegance to the space.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
