A pair of elegant early 20th century French two part display cabinets with a serene, timeworn presence. The painted pine has been carefully stripped to a layered, distressed surface in warm, mineral-toned hues. Each upper case presents fluted uprights and shaped detailing along the top of the glazed doors, lending a discreet neoclassical air. The doors are fitted with two glass panes that meet at the center; the glazing displays a softly antiqued surface with gentle waviness and minor irregularities at the join. Inside are three adjustable-height shelves; the lower cupboards include a fixed shelf for concealed storage. The top doors open with a simple knob, the base doors retain a working key, and a small iron latch was added for extra security, with one latch a little stiff.
Shallow in depth and visually light, the pair reads as architectural yet restrained, bringing quiet character to a room while framing collections beautifully. In a dining room they will showcase ceramics and glass with warmth, while the bases hold linens and serving pieces. In a study or library they suit books and curiosities, and their modest depth makes them practical along a corridor, flanking a fireplace, or anchoring either side of a doorway. The weathered paint softens contemporary settings and complements natural materials, allowing the contents to take center stage while the cabinetry adds a calm, enduring note.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
