A decorative pair of Italian Rococo Revival two-light wall sconces dating to the mid-20th century, circa 1940s–1950s. The carved and gilded backplates are richly ornamented with scrolling acanthus leaves and rocaille flourishes, from which extend two graceful gilt-metal C-scroll candle arms with foliate bobeches. Each sconce retains its period shield-form shades, fashioned from cream fabric with softly undulating edges and dark braided trim. The original shield-form shades display expected age-related discoloration and creasing, lending authenticity and period charm to the ensemble. Replacement shades could easily be fitted should a fresher aesthetic be desired.
Inspired by the exuberant ornament of 18th-century Italian interiors, these sconces capture the enduring appeal of the Rococo Revival style. Their lively scrollwork and aged gilding bring movement and texture to a wall. Ideal flanking a mirror, console, or bed, they lend warmth, romance, and old-world character to an interior, pairing beautifully with antique mirrors, painted furniture, and layered decorative schemes.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
