An elegant pair of 'Versailles' planters. These vintage wooden planters are an inexact pair (one is slightly larger than the other). They have cross bracing with a dark green paint finish. Traditionally, these planters are for growing citrus - pots are necessary in France as citrus trees need to be bought into the orangery for shelter over winter. Some history: The orange tree planters at Versailles, dating back to the reign of Louis XIV, were part of the king's grand vision for the palace gardens. Designed by Jules Hardouin-Mansart and completed in 1686, the Orangery housed these planters during winter to protect the trees from frost. The planters were square-shaped, featuring X-bracing for structural support and decorative pinecone finials, symbolizing fertility and prosperity. In the summer, the orange trees in these planters were displayed throughout the gardens, adding to the estate's visual splendor. During the winter months, they were moved into the Orangery, a structure characterized by its large, south-facing windows and vaulted galleries, ensuring the plants received ample sunlight and protection from the cold. Today, the tradition of using these distinctive planters continues at Versailles, with modern replicas maintaining the historical design and function. These planters have become iconic in garden design, symbolizing the elegance and sophistication of French formal gardens and influencing garden styles worldwide.
