A pair of Venetian bronze cavalli, late 19th century, cast as fantastical sea-horse figures with stylized horse heads and sinuous, scrolling bodies. Each figure features a bridled head, a finely detailed mane, and flowing, wave-like forms suggesting the movement of water, terminating in a curled foliate tail, and set on a low fluted oval plinth. The bronze has developed a warm golden-brown patina with darker tones in the recesses, highlighting the crisp chased details of the harness and fluid, ornamental surfaces. The pair presents in good condition with an attractive timeworn surface.
These cavalli were traditionally mounted in pairs on the sides of a gondola, where they served as emblems of protection and good fortune for gondoliers. The mythical hippocampus motif, inherited from classical antiquity and long associated with Venice’s dominion over the sea, became a favored ornament in the 18th and 19th centuries, produced by local foundries across the lagoon. Their sculptural vigor and maritime symbolism speak to the proud craft of Venetian boatmaking and the city’s enduring dialogue with the water.
In an interior, they serve as striking sculptural accents on a mantel, console, or bookshelf, lending a touch of nautical romance to both coastal and eclectic settings. They can also function as elegant bookends or as decorative doorstops flanking French doors. For added presence, consider displaying them on stone or lacquered plinths.
