This refined pair of cabriolet armchairs, circa 1900, presents an elegant Louis XV revival silhouette combined with the comfort of wide, stable seats. The carved beech frames, finished in a warm walnut tone, flow in serpentine lines with an arched crest centered by a floral cartouche, scrolled arm terminals, and cabriole legs with acanthus and shell motifs. Newly reupholstered in soft ivory jacquard with a subtle moiré effect and finished with brass nailhead trim, the chairs feature generous proportions and enveloping wings. Both are stable and comfortable, the frames in very good condition with light, age-appropriate wear.
Rooted in the Rococo vocabulary of the eighteenth century, cabriolet armchairs were designed for conversation and ease, their rounded backs and deep seats inviting relaxation. During the Belle Époque, French cabinetmakers revived these Louis XV forms with lively carving, asymmetry, and tactile upholstery punctuated by nailhead borders.
This pair embodies that revival : graceful, well-balanced, and crafted for both elegance and comfort. Ideal in a living room, library, or bedroom, they flank a fireplace or console with poise and create an inviting conversation corner when paired with a small table. The neutral upholstery blends effortlessly with antiques or modern pieces, while the warm wood finish brings depth and softness to both classic and contemporary interiors.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
