A charming pair of Directoire period rush-seated chairs dating from the late 18th century, combining the elegant restraint of neoclassical design with the warmth and authenticity of Provençal furniture. Raised on finely turned legs joined by delicate stretchers, the chairs feature beautifully curved backs with openwork splats, each displaying a slightly different motif, a delightful detail that gives the pair individuality and character.
The warm walnut-toned wood contrasts beautifully with the natural rush seats, while the loose cushions introduce a more refined decorative note. Made from antique printed cotton toile produced by the renowned Beautiran manufacture, the fabric features an orientalising design in faded raspberry pink and cream tones inspired by the fascination for imported Indian cottons and Eastern motifs fashionable in the late 18th century. The contrast between the restrained Provençal forms and the richly decorative textile brings softness, sophistication, and subtle exoticism to the ensemble.
The rush seats remain in good condition, and the chairs are sturdy and stable. The contrast between the sober neoclassical forms and the richly decorative textile gives the ensemble a particularly charming and layered decorative appeal.
Elegant yet approachable, they would bring warmth, softness, and understated refinement to a dining room, kitchen, or bedroom.
Perfect as accent seating flanking a console or fireplace, they also work at a writing desk or a small breakfast table where their petite scale keeps the setting light. T
