This petite Betschdorf stoneware crock is wheel-thrown with a softly tapered body, everted rim, and two small pulled lug handles. The gray body is enlivened with a restrained brushed cobalt decoration featuring a stylized floral sprig, with modest cobalt dabs accenting the handles. Faint potter’s rings encircle the body, revealing the rhythm of the wheel and the handmade nature of the piece. The surface shows the subtle sheen typical of salt glaze. Dating from the late 19th to early 20th century, it remains in good condition with light wear and minor kiln speckling.
Hand-thrown in Betschdorf in Alsace, a village celebrated for its centuries-old pottery tradition that blended local craftsmanship with salt-glazing methods brought from Germany, this humble yet elegant crock reflects the region’s union of practicality and understated beauty.
Originally used for storing butter, lard, or preserves, it now brings authentic rustic warmth to a home, whether displayed with other gray-and-cobalt wares or used individually as a vase, utensil holder, or decorative accent. Other similar pots available for separate purchase here.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
