A petite terracotta Biot jar from Provence, dating to the 20th century. It features the typical generous ovoid body rising from a narrow foot to a thick rolled collar. The exterior is left unglazed in a soft chalky buff tone with traces of slip and subtle kiln shadowing, while the interior and rim are finished in a pale yellow-green glaze that forms gentle drip trails along the shoulder. Small nicks to the rim, scattered glaze losses, and light pitting add to its authentic rustic charm.
Biot, near Antibes, has produced these oil jars since the 16th century, a regional craft tradition recognized throughout Provence and beyond. Originally used for storing olive oil and other provisions, the jars were glazed inside to be waterproof and left unglazed outside to allow the clay to breathe, with the pronounced collar aiding in sealing and handling. By the 20th century, production continued for both household use and the decorative market, and these iconic jars remain highly sought after today.
Its understated palette and rustic surface make it an easy anchor in a kitchen, garden room, or entry. Style it beside a fireplace or under a console, filled with olive branches, reeds, or dried hydrangea. If used as a planter, place a liner inside to protect the original interior glaze.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
