A petite French pen-and-watercolor view of a village street, with an indistinct signature and date (1916?). The small sheet depicts a sunlit lane with a row of houses receding to the right and the partial profile of a church tower at left, rendered in delicate pen work with transparent washes of pale blue, warm ochre, terracotta, and soft greens. It is set behind glass within a cream mat outlined by a terracotta wash line and presented in a molded giltwood frame with a stepped profile. The frame is attractively timeworn with scattered rubbing, the mount has a few specks, and the paper shows faint toning and minor foxing consistent with age.
This understated piece would sit beautifully within a gallery wall of small works in an entry or hallway, or anchor a vignette above a writing desk or console. The warm gilt and gentle palette complement neutral interiors from classic to country house, while on a shelf or mantel, placed on a small easel and layered with books or ceramics, it lends a quiet note of Old World charm.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
