This petite lidded sugar bowl from Dieulefit, France, is hand-thrown in glazed earthenware with a softly rounded body finished in a luminous apple-green. Two large oval handles in deep chocolate brown extend from the sides like whimsical mouse ears, giving the piece a sculptural and playful character. The domed lid, topped by a matching knob finial, may be a later addition as it does not fit perfectly. The glossy glaze shows fine kiln speckling and gentle irregularities that reflect its artisanal origin. The base is stamped SE Dieulefit, an indication of a Dieulefit manufacture. It is likely that the mark was mis-stamped and originally intended to read S.E.N. for Société Étienne Noël, a well-known mid-20th-century pottery from the region. In good condition with small glaze nicks at the footrim and light wear consistent with age and use. Dieulefit, a celebrated pottery center in France’s Drôme region, has been known since the early modern period for its robust tableware and lively glazes. After World War II, workshops such as Etienne Noel’s balanced functionality with expressive modern forms, retaining traditional hand-throwing methods while embracing a contemporary aesthetic. Equally charming as a sugar bowl, salt cellar, or decorative accent, it brings a warm, artisanal character to both rustic and modern interiors.
